In the Mountains

Most likely it developed from ancient tribal rituals which even the church fathers of the Middle Ages were not able to squelch. So they created a celebration to welcome the arrival of spring and the enjoyment of life. This celebration turned carnival was imported into New Orleans from Paris and Rome in the early 1700's. Today, this period of merriment is known as Mardi Gras.

Never to be outdone by big city folks, Red Riverites imported Mardi Gras to their little village in the mountains in 1993. It was such a huge success that every year since Cajuns and Creoles alike have fled the overgrown chaos of other locales in order to come to this quaint community for a much more intimate celebration. By the way, they also do a lot of skiing, snow boarding and snowmobiling.

Though not as grandiose, the fun-loving folks of Red River put on quite a show for their Mardi Gras visitors. Nothing is left out. The week is filled with costume balls, bead tossing, singing and dancing, Cajun and Creole gourmet delights, parades and all other manners of magic and merriment. It's a week not to be missed. So, oui cher, bring your beads and your skis and let the good times roll in Red River, New Mexico. photos: Carl Brown
