Almost 400 Riders For The Century Bike Tour

Almost 400 cyclists left Red River at 7:30 am this morning on a 100 mile ride around the Enchanted Circle sponsored by Outside Events Cycling Series.

The Century Tour has been taking place for over 20 years and was previously put on by the Red River Chamber of Commerce. This is the second year for this event to be put on by Outside Events, a subsidiary of Outside Interactive, the parent company of Outside Magazine. Cyclists leave Red River and makes their way through Questa, Taos, Angel Fire and Eagle Nest before finishing back in Red River. The ride consists of 100 miles and over 7,000 ft of vertical climbing, needless to say, it's probably not for beginners.

This ride is not considered a race but is more of a tour. Unlike years past when the entire ride was timed, only one 5 mile portion is timed in the current format, however, that portion is probably one of the most difficult as it encompasses the climb up the back side of Bobcat Pass all the way to the summit.

According to Tracy Powers, Outside Events customer service and merchandise manager, these types of events allow for enthusiasts to participate in 100 mile plus rides with the assurance that they are fully supported, including chase vehicles, food, water, medical aid etc.. Outside Event puts on multiple cycling events throughout the year, mostly in Colorado, events range from road biking, to gravel and even mt biking and have attendance levels anywhere from 400 to 4,000 participants.

Putting on an event of this magnitude is no small undertaking as was evident by the vast number of staff and volunteers which included timers, flaggers, chase vehicle drivers, photographers, food service providers and even a live band at the finish.
