  • Monster Slash Piles To Be Burned, Freeing Up Space For More

According to Fire Chief Deke Willis, the monster slash piles currently residing at the Red River Waste Water Treatment Plant are scheduled to be burned next week by the Red River Fire Dept. According to Willis, if all goes well, the pile will be burned next week and the town will start accepting additional slash the following week. Last month the town halted the acceptance of slash due to the overwhelming amount of debris it was receiving from the Dec 15th windstorm which decimated thousands of trees and created enormous amounts of limbs in need of disposal. This is good news to homeowners who have been working on their properties trying to get them cleaned up but had no where to dispose of all the debris. As soon as slash disposal is once again available, it will be posted here and on our Facebook page: Facebook - REDRIVERNM.COM

  • Review: Red River Ski Area, Summer Chairlift

Let's Go Up! While in Red River the scenic chairlift ride is one of the more relaxing and exciting adventures you can do. On a 3 person chairlift you ascend 1,600 vertical feet, up to the Summit of the Red River Ski Area. At the top you get stunning views of Wheeler Peak, the highest point in NM and the town of Red River. Also you can enjoy disc golf, hiking trails, and The Tip Restaurant for some food and beverage. There’s also a mountain bike trail for those that are skilled enough you try it. When in RR don’t miss this great experience! - Stan P

  • Review: Red River 4th of July Parade

Beautiful mountains, fire trucks, Classic muscle cars, paying homage to veterans, what more could you want from a 4th of July parade? Red River offers such an amazing parade that it kept my children entertained and engaged throughout the entire event. My family waved at the firefighters, stood at attention for soldiers, caught a glimpse of summer time Santa and sprawled out for the enormous amounts of candy! My daughter was mesmerized by the horses and my sons were obsessing over the aliens that waved their direction. I have been to parades all over Texas and other states… this was, hands down, a favorite for my family. Happy 4th of July! - Johnny H

  • New Fire Station To Be Built in The Upper Red River Valley

The Upper Valley and the Wheeler Peak Fire District are getting a new fire station. The new station will be built on the corner of Hwy 578 and Black Copper Canyon Rd. According to Deke Willis the Red River Fire Chief and also the Fire Chief of the Wheeler Peak Fire District, the new station will contain 3 bays and a classroom. The new station will provide additional fire protection to the folks in the Upper Valley and beyond. The Wheeler Peak district is separate from the Red River Fire Dept. and encompasses most of the land surrounding Red River, including land North to the Midnight Meadows area, West to the Chevron mine between Red River and Questa, and also includes the Bobcat Pass area to the Colfax county line. The land was purchased through private donations and money appropriated from the state fire fund. Funds to build the building will be obtained through the county and state and will first require a lease agreement with Taos County which the district is currently in the process of obtaining. The building will be built with regard to the surrounding architecture and of similar design in order to blend into the area. There are also plans to build a large underground water storage tank in order to fill and re-fill the fire trucks when needed. The existing Wheeler Peak fire station located on Hwy 578 at the entrance to 4th of July Canyon will remain and be used for the storage of additional equipment and apparatus. The existing station occupies National Forest land and is being used by the Wheeler Peak Fire District under a special use permit from the US Forest Service that severely restricts how the land is used and what improvements can be made to the building. By having their own land, the fire district will now have much more leeway and in turn be able to provide additional and higher quality services to the community. As with all rural fire depts., they gladly accept donations and are always looking for great volunteers. If you have interest in helping in any way, contact Fire Chief Deke Willis at the Red River Fire Dept. 575-754-6567

Who loves a parade? Well if you want to see a GREAT parade, you owe it to yourself and your family to be in Red River on July 4th! The charm and cool weather are enough to draw you to RR but combine it with America's Birthday and you got a once in a lifetime experience or make it an annual event like my family has. The whole county of Taos shows up and people are 3 deep along Main Street celebrating our freedom. Then after the parade hang out in the park, play games, grab some food and just enjoy the day. See you next year! - Stan P

  • A Hidden Valley Tradition, 4th Of July Picnic

For over 10 years, John and Diane Hughes have been hosting an annual 4th of July picnic in the meadow in front of their home in the Hidden Valley neighborhood, located in the southern end of the Upper Red River Valley. This tradition has attracted upwards of 300 people in some years. Children, dogs, seniors and everyone in between come together to celebrate our independence, exchange stories, and welcome new residents to Red River. Previous attendees have described this ongoing event as a scene right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. I spoke to Diane about how the event got started and the motivation behind it. While consuming a Lemon Jello Shot, Diane explained to me that it was important to her that the residents of the Upper Red River Valley and those that lived in town should all spend time together getting to know each other, and what better way to do this than by getting together for a big 4th of July Picnic. The party is a pot luck and the assortment and quality of the food is phenomenal, from traditional 4th of July fare, to exotic wild game dishes, and of course Diane' s famous home made ice cream. John, Diane, and many volunteers spend countless hours preparing the grounds, setting up tents and making sure everything is ready prior to the guests arrival. Diane and John fell in love with Red River and began coming here in the 1970's. They owned a few properties in the valley prior to settling into their current beautiful home in the Hidden Valley neighborhood. If you ever attend, you will be granted a wonderful memory. Thank you John and Diane for what you have created and the countless memories you have made.

  • Jeeping Up Old Red River Pass

Wow…what a view! When in Red River with an off-road vehicle, The Old Red River Pass is a must. It’s the original road/pass to access RR from Eagles Nest. It starts just outside of town on NM Hwy 578 a few miles on your left. The trail winds up several switchbacks, giving you great views of town until you get to the top of the pass. From the top you can either go back down (easiest route) or descend via one of two 4X4 only trails to either Bobcat Pass/Enchanted Forest or 4th July Canyon. When in RR don’t miss this trail for great scenery and fun! -Stan P

  • Review: Cowboy Evening @ Bobcat Pass

I have lived in Red River many years but had only been to Cowboy Evening once before about 10 years prior. My fiancé and our new next-door neighbors from Kansas had never been, so I booked us tickets for their opening night on June 21. I have to rave about what a wonderful experience it was. From the food, to the entertainment, to the entire atmosphere, you will want to make it an annual trip for you and your family. Let’s talk about the food. The ribeye steak I had was cooked to perfection by Michael Smith. Michael has worked at Bobcat pass for as long as I can remember and does an incredible job. Michael is also a very talented local musician who plays occasionally with Syd Masters. For the side dishes they offer, made from scratch Dutch Oven bread that melts in your mouth, beans, baked potatoes, and corn on the cob. Make sure to save room for Mrs. Lewis’s, made from scratch cinnamon rolls for dessert. Those are easily the best cinnamon rolls I have ever had in my life. Syd Masters is the in-house musician who plays most (if not all) of the shows during the summer. Syd was joined by Gary Roller, another incredibly talented local musician out of Taos, who plays with Michael Martin Murphey. Syd’s melodic songs (some of which he wrote himself) and voice created an air of ambiance that will take you back to the days of cowboys gathering around a campfire. Syd keeps the crowd engaged with stories, trivia, and birthday/anniversary shout outs. Tonya and Vance Lewis’s son Hank also did a few tricks on his mare Lily to the delight of the crowd. Bobcat Pass Wilderness Adventures is located on the top of Bobcat Pass at about 10,000 ft in elevation. Bobcat Pass also offer horseback rides and UTV tours. The barn where they hold the dinner & concert is covered and has stoves in the middle to keep guests warm during the cool mountain evenings. I do recommend bringing a jacket though as it was in the mid 50’s when we went. Children can watch and admire their trail horses and they have roping dummies for the kids to play with. One tiny cowboy even brought his stick horse to ride around the grounds on. The Lewis family has done a marvelous job at creating a truly unforgettable experience for the past 31 years. I hope you and your family will get a chance to come join them this summer. I’m so glad we did! -Megan Gallagher If you are ever in need of a lender: loansbymegan.com
