  • Impromptu Duck Pond Forms On Red River's West Side

Within a few hours on Saturday afternoon, a duck pond miraculously appeared at the corner of Tenderfoot and Willow Placer where there had been just dry ground that morning. In a sign that Spring is definitely on the way, the pond filled rapidly from the melting snow and was immediately populated with lots of ducks and Kim Leach's dog Chloe. The ducks new home was short lived as evening approached and a city worker appeared with a grader to drain the pond and encourage the ducks to go back to the river and Kim's dog to go home. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. -Rob Swan Swan Realty

  • Maintaining the Character of Red River's Main Street: The Tourist Overlay Zone Ordinance

In 2016, the Red River city council adopted the Tourist Overlay Zone ordinance with the aim of preserving the unique character of Main Street. The ordinance requires that any new buildings or businesses built within the zone's boundaries must cater to tourist-oriented purposes. In this article, we will explore the implications of this ordinance for the Red River community and what it means for those planning on buying or building within the designated area. The Tourist Overlay Zone stretches from Caribel St. on the west side of town to Jayhawk St. on the east side. This area is considered to be the heart of Main Street and is where most of the tourist-oriented businesses are currently located. These businesses, such as hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops, contribute significantly to the local economy and help to create a vibrant and unique downtown experience for visitors. However, as with many popular tourist destinations, there is always a risk of losing the charm and character that makes the area special. This is where the Tourist Overlay Zone comes in. By requiring that any new businesses or buildings within the zone cater to tourists, the city hopes to maintain the unique character of Main Street and preserve it for future generations. It's important to note that the ordinance only applies to the first 50 feet back from Main St. and only on the first floor. If you plan on building beyond this area, the Tourist Overlay Zone does not apply. However, if you do plan on building or setting up shop within the designated zone, you must comply with the requirements of the ordinance. The full text of the ordinance is available here, and anyone with questions about zoning in Red River is encouraged to contact our office or the city for more information. The city is committed to working with residents and business owners to ensure that the Tourist Overlay Zone serves its intended purpose while also promoting economic growth and development in the community. In conclusion, the Tourist Overlay Zone ordinance is an important tool for preserving the unique character of Main Street and promoting economic growth in the Red River community. With the requirement that this designated zone caters to tourists, the city hopes to maintain the charm and vibrancy of downtown Red River for generations to come. If you plan on buying or building within the zone, be sure to familiarize yourself with the requirements of the ordinance to ensure compliance and help preserve the character of this special community. • Lifts West Fire, Red River, NM

On Saturday, Feb 18th, at about 2:15 pm, the Red River Fire Dept was dispatched to the Lift West Condominiums for a small fire in a second floor corner unit. According to Fire Chief Deke Willis, the fire was contained within the corner of the unit on an exterior wall and at this point the official cause is still undetermined but is suspected to be electrical in nature. Two fire engines were dispatched including a ladder truck that was used to access the building from the exterior. All damage was contained within the original unit where the fire began. The Red River Fire Dept., as usual, responded quickly and in a professional and highly organized manner. We are all very grateful for their service and dedication. -Rob Swan Swan Realty

  • Music Review - Rudy Boy And His Screamin' Guitar

On a beautiful afternoon last summer as Molly Dog and I were driving by the Bull O The Woods beer garden in the golf cart, I heard a well amplified guitar pouring sound out from the Bull O' The Woods Beer Garden on to Main St. Now the fact that I have lived in Red River for most of my life, I am very accustomed to a lot of outdoor music, especially in the summer months. So driving through town on a summer day, live music often times fills the air. However, on this particular day when I heard that screamin' guitar, I knew exactly who it was without even turning around to look. There is only one person that I know of that can play a guitar like that. Rudy Boy Jaramillo was in town. It didn't take long to park the golf cart, make my way inside the Bull with Molly and order the biggest beer they had then find ourselves a front row seat to hear some of the best Rock and Blues guitar the Southwest has to offer. Years ago, I owned the Bull O' The Woods Saloon and The Rudy Boy Experiment was one of my favorite acts to book. I had originally met Rudy at The Taos Inn 20 years ago where he was playing a solo gig. The Taos Inn has a bit of a subdued atmosphere and I remember thinking to myself, "I think this guy could do a lot more with a bigger stage and a rowdy crowd". I hired him on the spot to play at the Bull and he sure did not disappoint. Rudy didn't care if we had a small or large crowd, he brought everything he had every single time he showed up. These days he definitely has a little more grey in his beard but the enthusiasm, charisma, showmanship and his ability to wear out a guitar hasn't faded. Rudy will give you everything he has every time. If you are lucky enough to be in Red River this weekend, you are in luck. Rudy will be playing at the Bull Saturday night at 8:30 pm. Not sure what the cover will be if any, but don't worry about it, whatever it is, Rudy will make sure you get your money's worth. - Rob Swan Swan Realty https://www.facebook.com/RedRiverNewMex

  • Ice Dams Cause Flooding On Tenderfoot Trail

Thursday morning residents on Tenderfoot Trail located on the West side of Red River woke up to localized flooding due to ice dams building along the length of Pioneer Creek. Water was flowing into the roadway and adjacent residential lots flooding yards along with phone and electrical boxes. Due to the fact that parts of Pioneer Creek lie on Forest Service land, Kim Leach, Broker at Swan Realty reached out to the Forest Service for guidance on how to handle the situation. After being notified, Ricardo Leon with the US Forest Service responded promptly by email indicating that he was able to touch base with officials at the Town Of Red River giving Forest Service support to use any equipment necessary to break up ice on Forest Service land. Isaac Cisneros with the Town Of Red River indicated that part of the problem was on private land and the town was working on addressing the situation. As of this writing, Red River's hardworking crews were dealing with the situation and will hopefully have it resolved by this evening.

  • Is Red River NM. Pet Friendly?

One of our founding Fathers (or mothers in this case) by the name of Tillie Simion once said, "Red River is Great For Men and Dogs But Hell On Women And Horses". The hell that the women and horses faced back in the day has definitely subsided but the fact that it is a great place for Dogs still holds true. The cool weather combined with the endless forests to roam and explore make for a dog paradise. Go for a hike through the woods, take a swim in the river or just lay in the grass and nap in the morning sun your dog will most likely not want to leave. As far as accommodations, you will find plenty of properties that will cater to your furry friend. A quick Google search should bring you plenty of options to choose from. But whatever you do, don't leave your dog at home as he will enjoy Red River as much or more than the rest of the family.

  • Super Natural Forces May Have Caused Unidentified Man To Become Sober In Record Time.

A new world record was set in Red River over the Thanksgiving weekend when an unidentified man who appears to be intoxicated based upon his erratic walking pattern, completely sobers up in approximately 2 seconds. The transformation in the level of sobriety did not appear to be completely voluntary as supernatural forces may have been at play. Surveillance video of the transformation shows the man walking toward a hole in the ice on a frozen pond. At first glance his approach to the hole appears to be innocent curiosity, but after further review it appears that there may have been unknown forces at work. With some type of super power, the unknown force drew the man toward the hole and upon his arrival he peers in. At this point it is obvious that the this unknown force grasps firmly ahold of him and pulls him inward toward the underworld. The man appears to be powerless under the overwhelming power and succumbs to the downward pull into the freezing water. As the video shows, once the man is submerged, he reemerges almost instantaneously, extracts himself from the hole and proceeds to run from the evil force in a perfectly straight line back to from where he came, with absolutely no signs of intoxication. It is obvious that some sort of transformation took place within that 2 second ordeal that somehow removed all alcohol from his body prior to reemerging from the abyss. It can only be assumed that the combination of the victims overwhelming desire to defeat the evil force and possibly some divine intervention (we will never know) that thankfully he is alive and well. At this time we do not know what demonic force may have caused this incident, however until authorities can identify and isolate the cause, the public is urged to resist intoxication while walking on or near frozen ponds.
