  • Red River's "Big Dig" Is Underway

This week marked the start of Red River's water main replacement. The current cast iron main was installed in the late 1960's or early 1970's (nobody really knows) and has been in need of replacement for sometime. The current line has been plagued with frequent leaks and breakages at times rendering the towns water pressure at dangerously low levels. The cast iron line will be replaced with a modern and more efficient PVC line. Additional valves will also be installed to allow the town to shut off water to certain smaller sections of the municipality if need be. Currently, if the water needs to be shut off, it involves shutting off large sections of the town, inconveniencing many residents and businesses. With the installation of more valves, the town will be able to shut off small sections without affecting a large area. The new line which was funded through a 1.8 million dollar loan obtained from the NM State Rural Infrastructure Project Fund will be installed in Main St from just east of town hall all the way to Oro Fino Trail on the west end. The work has been contracted to Sanchez Demolition out of Albuquerque. The contractor is obligated to complete the project within 150 days from date of commencement, however, the project is expected to be completed well before then. Rob Swan Swan Realty

  • US Forest Service Discusses Cleanup Plan For Wind Damaged Areas

Adam LaDell, the District Ranger for the Carson National Forest spent time on Tuesday addressing the public in regard to the cleanup effort for areas damaged by the December 2021, windstorm that wreaked havoc and toppled thousands of trees in the Red River area. According to LaDell, over 5,000 acres were affected and are in need of cleanup and remediation. LaDell stated that funds for the cleanup are available and will most likely be completed by outside contractors from the Pacific Northwest as our local region lacks the infrastructure and equipment to handle such a large timber project. Contractors from the Northwest States have already been on the ground assisting with the needs of the Calf Canyon fire and have shown a willingness to assist with the wind damage cleanup. Cleanup will consist of removing downed trees and the replanting of multiple native species. The cleanup will take time due to the need to acquire necessary approvals and mobilize resources. Cleanup in some of the areas will begin immediately while other areas may take multiple years to complete. The first area to receive assistance will be the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area due to the fact that the wind damage it sustained will have a negative economic impact on the community if it is unable to open for the coming ski season. LaDell plans on hiring a local contractor as soon as possible to clear trails within the ski area to ensure it is able to open on time. LaDell indicated that he will hold a monthly meeting in order to keep everyone updated. - Rob Swan Swan Realty

  • No, The Bull Has Not Relocated To Vietnam

Patrons and fans of The Bull O' The Woods Saloon were alarmed Saturday morning when they noticed on their Facebook Feeds, that The Bull had changed their name and updated their address to a location in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. The Bull has long been a favorite of our panhandle visitors, so as you can imagine, the thought of moving it from Red River to Vietnam caused severe anxiety and depression to more than a few of our visitors. That half day drive for a cold beer just turned into an expensive plane ticket and a trip half way around the world, not to mention the fact that most of our customers have no idea how to translate "Give Me A Cold Beer" into Vietnamese. It was with great urgency that this unfortunate turn of events must be verified or debunked. A quick drive through the East end of town did prove that The Bull was still in it's original location and in fact, no relocation had taken place. The misunderstanding most likely came from a malicious hack done buy a company in Ho Chi Minh City. This company apparently sells Nitrous Oxide filled balloons to dancing girls. (No I didn't make that up, see for yourself - https://bit.ly/3L20hib ) So if you are in the market for such a product you may want to check them out, but if you are just wanting an adult beverage in your favorite Rocky Mt Town, rest assured, The Bull will still be able to hook you up in the same spot it has been since 1939. -Rob Swan SwanRealtyInc.com

  • Almost 400 Riders For The Century Bike Tour

Almost 400 cyclists left Red River at 7:30 am this morning on a 100 mile ride around the Enchanted Circle sponsored by Outside Events Cycling Series. The Century Tour has been taking place for over 20 years and was previously put on by the Red River Chamber of Commerce. This is the second year for this event to be put on by Outside Events, a subsidiary of Outside Interactive, the parent company of Outside Magazine. Cyclists leave Red River and makes their way through Questa, Taos, Angel Fire and Eagle Nest before finishing back in Red River. The ride consists of 100 miles and over 7,000 ft of vertical climbing, needless to say, it's probably not for beginners. This ride is not considered a race but is more of a tour. Unlike years past when the entire ride was timed, only one 5 mile portion is timed in the current format, however, that portion is probably one of the most difficult as it encompasses the climb up the back side of Bobcat Pass all the way to the summit. According to Tracy Powers, Outside Events customer service and merchandise manager, these types of events allow for enthusiasts to participate in 100 mile plus rides with the assurance that they are fully supported, including chase vehicles, food, water, medical aid etc.. Outside Event puts on multiple cycling events throughout the year, mostly in Colorado, events range from road biking, to gravel and even mt biking and have attendance levels anywhere from 400 to 4,000 participants. Putting on an event of this magnitude is no small undertaking as was evident by the vast number of staff and volunteers which included timers, flaggers, chase vehicle drivers, photographers, food service providers and even a live band at the finish. If you would like to participate in next years event, you can check out their website and sign up at https://events.outsideonline.com/

  • Taos County Title Co. Delays May Finally Be Ending

A November 25, 2021 article titled "Taos county title company delays" that dealt with the severe delay in the transfer of property within Taos County may finally be coming to an end with the opening of a new title company. Delays of six to seven months have not been uncommon for the past few years due to a backlog in processing real estate transactions through the existing title companies. Pioneer Title and Escrow Services, which is owned by New Mexico attorney Richard W. Norris, and which has operated in several New Mexico counties for several years (including Colfax County), has announced that it will be accepting orders for title commitments and closings, possibly, as early as August 26, 2022. This change in the market should bring much needed relief to those wishing to buy or sell property within the county. In a conversation with Holly Hillenbrand, the operations manager at Pioneer, she stated that "Pioneer Title prides itself in producing title commitments in a timely manner, days not weeks. The company also prioritizes the timing of its closings, so that those contracts with early closing dates get closed on time." Even one week is a incredible improvement compared to the months long wait Taos County residents have had to endure the past few years. The frustration among residents, real estate agents and lenders has become so great that many had been looking for alternatives in order to accomplish their transactions in a timely manner, including foregoing title insurance and closing directly with local attorneys. Pioneer Title's new office will be located at 204 Paseo Del Pueblo Norte, suite a, Taos NM. They can also be reached at 866-294-4100. Rob Swan Qualifying Broker Swan Realty

  • Review: Red River Vacation With Family

I was born in Raton, NM but grew up in Missouri. My daughter mother and I came to visit my brother and brought us to Red River. I had never been before. Let me say that this was one of the best vacation spots I've ever been. The scenery is so amazingly beautiful and the clean crisp smell of pine trees in the air is so surreal! I never imagined how beautiful it really was until we came . We only stayed the day but so much to do that we didn't get to stop in all of the places ! The ice cream and candy shop made the kids especially happy along with riding go karts. Such a quaint little place, we definitely want to come and stay a night next visit !! Thank you From Missouri ... - R Oehrke

  • Residents Are Getting Too Much Sleep, NM Gas Co Determines. Schedules Line Cleaning To Rectify.

Residents on the west side of Red River were awakened late Wednesday night to what appeared to be a Boeing 747 departing their neighborhood. The deafening sound prompted multiple 911 calls along with some residents making plans for what appeared to be the end of their natural lives. However, it turns out that the excruciating noise was merely NM Gas Company cleaning out their lines in the middle of the night. Apparently someone, somewhere at NM Gas decided that the local residents were in fact sleeping too much so the line cleaning was scheduled at night in order to keep them awake for an additional hour or so. A subsequent gas line cleanout was scheduled the following day just to insure that no residents tried to grab a nap to make up for the lost sleep. A call was made to NM Gas for comment but the call was placed on hold for 20 minutes then disconnected.

  • We Are Wearing Out Our Police Lights. No Side x Sides on Main St.

As you know (or are supposed to know) Side x Sides are not allowed on Main St. As a concerned citizen I am worried that our Red River Deputies are starting to experience workplace fatigue from having to pull so many over. The police lights on their cars also appear to be wearing out from excessive use. Like all equipment, police lights have a lifespan and we would like them to last for more than one month. I'm sure the cost of the forms that they use to write warnings and citations is significant, so if our town could save a little money there, that would be helpful. Red River is a small town with a small budget so if we could save a few bucks on lights and forms we could spend it elsewhere to make our town even greater. It is predicted that Side x Sides will be legal on Main St sometime this Fall, so until then, hold your horses and please do your part and don't ride your Side x Side on Main St and if you see someone else doing it, a friendly reminder would go a long way.

  • Review: Fagan's Guided Fly Fishing

My husband, our son, our daughter, and our cousin's son went with our guide Todd to learn to fly fish. We are from Oklahoma so this is not a pastime we get to learn in our neck of the woods! They all went to a beautiful spot. Despite the unseasonable cool and rainy weather, they were treated with professional, patient and friendly service. It was so nice for them to spend time with each other learning something new especially since we are thousands of miles apart during the year. They will definitely use these skills in the future. We plan on returning to try these skills out again here in Red River and elsewhere in our beautiful country. Fagan's Guided Fly Fishing - 575-770-9451
